Who are we

HydroSciences Montpellier (HSM) is a joint research unit depending of CNRS, Université Montpellier and IRD. It gathers some 150 researchers and teaching staff. The main objective of HSM is to quantify and predict how climate change and human activities affect water resources in the Mediterranean and tropical regions. In particular, HSM focuses its research on HSM focuses its research on (1) evaluating the impact of climatic forcing on extreme hydrological events, water quality and availability of groundwater and surface resources, particularly in Mediterranean countries 2) understanding eco-hydrological processes between land, vegetation and atmosphere in semi-arid ecosystems of the Western Africa and Mediterranean countries, 3) characterising and modeling water transfers in heterogeneous aquifers (karst systems, fissured rocks, sedimentary basins) and 4) studying how human activities affect the behavior of organic and inorganic contaminants, and pathogens, bacteria. Determining how the transformations of contaminants, the adaptation and emergence of pathogens impact environmental resources and further human health. HSM is internationally known for its work on hydrosystems : water pathways and resources - contaminant fate, transformation and fluxes in human-impacted watersheds, metrology and hydro-climatic risks. We work on water resource management at basin scale, water resource models as a tool for forecasting studies, water preservation, savings and reuse through technological innovation, and on contaminants and human risk assessment, mining pollution and environment-health issues.
Platforms and equipments are dedicated to major, trace elements and isotopes analysis (HSM Water Chemistry Laboratory and AETE-ISO facility (OSU-OREME, University of Montpellier)), emerging contaminants analysis and microbiology, gas and energy fluxes at the land surface.
HSM is widely involved in observation services dedicated to long-term monitoring of climatological, hydrological, chemical and ecological changes in different watersheds (OSU OREME (observatoire de Recherche Méditerranéen de l’Environnement), AMMA-CATCH in Western Africa), SNO Karst (national observing service of INSU), CRITEX project (innovative monitoring of the critical zone).
