Welcome

to UMR HydroSciences Montpellier

Study and predict the impacts of climate and human activities on the water cycle and their feedbacks on humans and ecosystems.

The Montpellier HydroSciences Mixed Research Unit has 3 supervisory bodies: the University of Montpellier, the CNRS, the IRD. HSM brings together disciplinary skills to study, quantify and predict the impacts of climate and human activities on water resources in Mediterranean and tropical regions. HSM has a workforce of around 180 agents, including 120 permanent staff (researchers, EC, ITA-BIATSS, EC-HU, PH CHU, EC and MA IMT) and 60 non-permanent staff, including 45 doctoral students, including around ten under joint supervision at UM. Among all doctoral students, more than half are doctoral students from the South registered in their home University and/or under joint supervision in the North.

  • the water cycle and interactions at different scales in the atmosphere – vegetation – soil – aquifer – river complex
  •   characterization and modeling of transfers in heterogeneous environments
the evolution of water resources in the face of global changes with complex prospective scenarios
  •   the dynamics of metallic and emerging contaminants and the health risks and adaptation mechanisms of waterborne pathogenic bacteria.

Scientific activities are structured into 6 research teams: * ContEm, * HEC, * HYTAKE, * H2U, * PEnSTer, * PHySE.

These teams come together and come together within the 3 transversal themes (TT): * Eco-Hydro(geo)logical Processes of the Critical Zone, * Water in the city, * Environmental and Health Issues (EES).

A multidisciplinary UMR in the areas of interactions between water, environment and health, HSM covers a wide spectrum of themes in quantitative hydrology, water biogeochemistry and biological and medical sciences. HSM’s main objectives are to study and predict the impacts of climate and human activities on the cycle. water and their feedback on humans and ecosystems.

This diversity of themes centered on water made it possible to integrate the “Water and Environment” Carnot in 2020.
